What do we need vitamin B6 for?

You can hear about vitamin B6 in connection with magnesium supplementation. But supporting the absorption of this mineral from the digestive tract is not its only role. Why should you care about your body's vitamin B6 levels and why is it so important? Find out the answer.

The role of vitamin B6 in the body

Vitamin B6 is called pyridoxine. In plasma it occurs mainly in the form of pyridoxal phosphate, which supports the functioning of the whole body. It takes part in chemical transformations taking place in the body, including helping in amino acid metabolism, metabolising complex carbohydrates, phospholipids, fatty acids and cholesterol. It synthesizes haem, one of the basic components of haemoglobin and niacin (vitamin B3), to which cholesterol regulating functions are attributed. It supports the formation of hormones, prostaglandins, enzymes. It affects the nervous and immune system. It contributes to the formation of antibodies, strengthening the body's defensive functions. It stores energy, takes care of kidney health, supports proper pressure and proper muscle work.

Where can you find vitamin B6?

In order to increase the amount of pyridoxine in the body, it is recommended to include buckwheat groats, potatoes, cereal products (rye bread) as well as meat. The largest amount of B6 is found in pork, beef, chicken and turkey meat. We will meet her in brassica vegetables: Brussels sprouts and Beijing cabbage.

Abnormal vitamin B6 levels

Although an adequate diet covers the body's needs for this substance, deficiencies do occur and are usually associated with insufficient levels of B vitamins. The risk increases in people whose diet is rich in fats and poor in protein. A B6 deficiency can be harmful to health and can lead to inflammation of the skin and mucous membranes. It contributes to an increased risk of anaemia and increases susceptibility to infection. It's a burden on the nervous system.

Equally dangerous is the excess of B6 in the body and the associated risk of neurological diseases, a strong feeling of cold and numbness in the limbs and lack of muscle coordination.

Vitamin B6 - health benefits

Taking care of the correct level of B6 and avoiding its deficiency is associated with benefits for the whole body:

  • Vitamin B6 reduces pain in the wrists,
  • It has an anti seborrheic effect and cares for the condition and healthy appearance of the skin,
  • reduces the risk of Parkinson's disease,
  • helps with hair loss.
